The Berkeley Lecce
The Christmas Carol Concert
On December 6th, 2021, the Circolo Berkeley held its annual Carol Concert in the Church of Santa Rosa, Lecce.
The Christmas Carol Concert is a tradition in the Circolo Berkeley and in the past it was held at the Chiesa Greca, Lecce, where Papas Nick kindly welcomed us.
However, as social distances must be respected, it was no longer possible to have the carol-singing there and Don Damiano, the Parish Priest at Santa Rosa, willingly received us in his more spacious church.
David Katan, the President of the Circolo, gave a warm welcome to all the singers and musicians. These included students from the Liceo Scientifico “De Giorgi”. He also thanked the organizers of the event, Patrizia Sanguedolce and Nicky James, with the valued support of Claudia Mazzei.
Verses from Isaiah were read by Matthew Zingraff (from Isaiah IX, Verses 2, 6 and 7).
Antonella Catanzaro and Nicky James sang and led the carol singing, (not an easy task when the singers in the congregation wear face-masks!). Stefano Galati skilfully accompanied the singers on the piano.
The De Giorgi Orchestra, directed by Massimiliano Cananà, played various pieces, including a very lively “Santa Claus is coming to town”, particularly appropriate because it was the feast day of Saint Nicholas.
This was followed by “Jingle Bell Rock”, played on the piano by lovely little Amy Gravili, only eight years old.
On behalf of the Circolo Berkeley, Hilda Caffery, thanked Don Damiano and his community for their hospitality, and all those present for their participation. Don Damiano then concluded a very enjoyable evening by giving his blessing and best wishes for a joyful, peaceful, happy Christmas.
